Why Care About Elder Care?
The Challenge
- This decade alone there are 7 Million "baby boomers" coming of age for senior living (US 2020 Census).
- In the U.S., 10,000 people a day are turning 65 years of age, putting the healthcare system under strain - with minority populations being the first to suffer (AARP International.org).
- There is a lack of accessible and culturally sensitive assisted living facilities in the U.S., particularly for Black and Indigenous communities.
- The current system is unable to serve those of lower middle income, leaving many with no plan for retirement and elder care (National Council on Aging).
- The number of Americans ages 65 and older is projected to increase from 58 million in 2022 to 82 million by 2050 (a 47% increase), and the 65-and-older age group’s share of the total population is projected to rise from 17% to 23% (Population Reference Bureau Fact Sheet) .
Addressing the Challenge: Anchorage, Alaska
Through research and examination of elder care populations/needs, we are collaborating with local community leaders and organizations to establish assisted living facilities and related services in the Dena’ina Territory/Anchorage, Alaska.
Addressing the Challenge: Kansas City, Missouri
As well as in Kansas city, Missouri whose traditional territory includes the people of the Kiikaapoi, Kaw/Kansa, Osage, Shawnee, Nutachi and Ochéthi Sakówin with the expectation to grow to more sites.
